Grisha Al-Asadi (BFA 00) produced and edited the trailer for Beyond Honor. It opens this weekend in NY and LA and he urges everyone to attend since attendance during the first weekend is so important to the life of a film. Grisha says: ?This movie is not for everyone; it is not a dating film, and if you have problems with your stomach you might as well not go. However, it is a heartfelt independent movie, produced under $200,000 and self-distributed. Here you go fellow film students ? anything is possible in Hollywood, you just need to know how. So please find the time and the $10 to spend and see this film in NY or LA. It?s a good example that film is still an art form, not to say it is an art film, but there is a platform for character driven drama?s outside the studio world.? Link for the trailer is at www.beyondhonormovie.com.
Following is an e-mail I received this week from faculty member, Chip Chalmers: ?This past Monday, March 6th, 2006, in Toluca Lake, California, we had what is, I hope, the inaugural and annual BFA Graduate Los Angeles Lecture Series. (Or the BFAGLALS - well, never mind) In attendance at the luncheon were Austin Smoak, Daphne Raves, Meghan Hernandez, Lindsay McCall, (all BFA 05) and Wolf Kraft from the class of 2004. This year?s guest was Steven L. Sears who turned a one and a half hour lunch in to a 4 hour learning fest. With credentials as Exec Producer, Show Runner, Creator-Producer, and prolific writer, Steve had a lot to give and is still giving. He made sure that all in attendance were given his e-mail and already he has helped Austin and Daphne with some great information via e-mail. Steve has a much less known item on his resume. He has been judging student films for the Academy for over 10 years and had dozens of tips on writing and directing a well crafted short story and the reasons why the ones who win are successful. The now EX-students (That's strange for me to say) were treated to some good food, some good times chat, and some seriously important information. Steve has also seen a thousand Director Reels and had some great advice there as well. Next year we hope to double the size and add a new guest. We'll hopefully be doing this every Spring Break, but this was a good start for something good for our BFA grads in LA. I think we had everyone who lives there from this class with the exception of Michael Lockridge who had a 5PM call for an all nighter and had to beg off, sadly. I imagine if not for the Academy Awards that night, we would have taken the discussions to another venue as we nearly wore out our welcome at the first one. I also got permission to refer the actors who have participated so enthusiastically in our movies to contact an experienced actor friend who has all the scoop on resumes, drop offs, head shots, agents, etc. All in all, quite a success. Not an official FSU College of Film event, but hopeful and educational nonetheless.?
